How to get your NSW boat licence
- Get practical experience. Fill in the practical logbook with an experienced skipper, or do an approved practical course.
- Pass the knowledge test at a Service NSW centre or with an authorised training provider. You can sit it from age 12.
- Apply at a service centre with your ID and eyesight test.
| Boat licence test | 50 multiple-choice questions. You must get 20 set questions all right, and at least 24 of the other 30. |
|---|---|
| Jet ski (PWC) test | 15 multiple-choice questions. You need at least 12 right. |
Already have a boat licence? Upgrading to a jet ski (PWC) licence needs no practical logbook: you pass the 15-question PWC test and apply.
Details and fees are on the NSW Government site. Everything the test asks is in the free NSW Boating Handbook.
Questions
Is this the official NSW test?
No. Skipper Ready is an independent practice tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by Transport for NSW or Service NSW. The questions are written from the rules in the official NSW Boating Handbook. You still book and sit the real test with Service NSW or an authorised training provider.
NSW has free practice tests. Why pay?
Do the free official practice test too: it's a good check. A test tells you what you got wrong. Skipper Ready teaches you why: lessons with diagrams, an explanation for every answer, the topics you miss brought back, and a readiness score so you know when to book. And if you reach "Ready" and still fail, you get your money back.
How does the pass guarantee work?
Reach "Ready" in the full pack (90% or more on three timed mock tests in a row), then sit the NSW knowledge test within 30 days. If you don't pass, email me your result within 14 days of the test and I'll refund the full A$49.
When do I get access?
The full pack opens by 20 November 2026. I'll email your access link to the address you use at checkout. If it isn't ready by then, you get a full refund. The 20 free questions above work now.
Does it cover the jet ski (PWC) licence?
Yes. There's a separate PWC mode with jet ski rules and 15-question mock tests, included in the same A$49.
I'm under 18. Can I use it?
Yes. You can sit the NSW boat licence test from age 12. Ask a parent or guardian to buy it for you. The only thing I keep is the email address used at checkout.
What if it doesn't help?
Email me within 30 days of launch and I'll refund you in full. No form, no questions. The pass guarantee applies on top of that.
Secure checkout by Stripe. Pass guarantee. Opens by 20 November 2026 or a full refund.
